Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication: The Baytown Owner’s Guide

If the bracket, hinge, or mounting point on your Ghost Controls gate opener has cracked, torn, or pulled loose, we can weld or fabricate the replacement part and have it installed, usually the same day we come out. Typical welded bracket or hinge repairs in Baytown run between $180 and $340 installed, depending on steel thickness and whether the part needs to be fabricated from scratch or reinforced in place. Most owners discover the failure the same way: the gate starts scraping the ground, the opener strains audibly, or the whole arm pulls away from the post with a dull tear.

We stock common Ghost Controls-compatible weld plates, gate hinge brackets, and post-mount reinforcements on the truck, and we fabricate non-stock pieces in a local Baytown metal shop when the original part isn’t worth saving. You get a written price before any cutting or welding starts, and a photo record of what we found and what we installed when we leave.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls runs two main opener lines: the AX series for single swing gates and the TSS/TSW series for dual swing and heavier gates. The weld points differ. AX-series units mount to a steel post bracket that takes most of the torque load, and that bracket is where we see fatigue failures. TSS-series openers use an articulated arm that bolts to both the post and the gate leaf, which doubles the number of mounting points and doubles the places where a weld or a bracket can fail.

There’s a compatibility gotcha specific to Ghost Controls: the post-mount bracket bolt pattern changed between early AX-series runs and the current production line. Early AX brackets used a narrower four-bolt spread. If your unit predates roughly 2018 and the bracket tore out, a current off-the-shelf bracket won’t line up without drilling new holes or fabricating an adapter plate. We carry both patterns and will fabricate the adapter rather than making you drill the post and weaken it further.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question, our position is practical. For the bracket itself, a properly fabricated steel plate welded by someone who does this daily will outlast the original stamped part in Baytown’s salt-and-humidity air. For the arm assembly and anything that carries motor thrust, we stay with Ghost Controls parts. The steel on the aftermarket mounting plates is often thinner than the original spec, and we’d rather charge you for one good weld than two.

Vance Gate Repair is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Ghost Controls, and we don’t pretend to be. We stock their parts because they’re common in this area and we know the failure points.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • The gate sags toward the latch side and scrapes the driveway. This usually means the weld at the lower hinge has fatigued or the hinge bracket itself is bending. The opener keeps pushing because it doesn’t know the gate is dragging, which accelerates the failure.
  • The opener arm pulls away from the post or gate leaf with a visible gap. A torn weld here isn’t subtle. You’ll see daylight between the bracket and the steel. The gate will still move, but every cycle is twisting the remaining weld points until they fail too.
  • You hear a creak or a metallic pop when the gate starts moving. That’s steel flexing at a cracked weld. It will sound like the gate itself, but if you watch the bracket while someone cycles the opener, you’ll see the movement.
  • The gate post itself leans or shifts when the gate opens. The weld may be intact but the post footing has loosened in the concrete. We can reinforce the post base with a fabricated collar or weld a brace plate, depending on what the concrete allows.
  • Rust blooms around the bracket bolts or weld line. Baytown humidity near the bay accelerates corrosion on unpainted or under-painted steel. Once rust gets under a weld, the remaining good steel is thinner than it looks, and that part needs replacement, not just a re-weld over the top.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest range for Baytown, based on what we actually charge:

  • Bracket reinforcement weld (in place): $140-$220. We clean the area, weld the cracked joint or add a gusset plate, and repaint.
  • New fabricated steel bracket, painted and installed: $180-$300, depending on steel gauge and whether we need to drill new bolt holes.
  • Full hinge replacement with welded post plate: $260-$380. This is a cut-off-the-old, weld-on-the-new job where we remove the gate leaf, true it, and re-hang it.
  • Post base reinforcement collar: $300-$450 if the concrete footing is still sound and the post itself hasn’t rotted at the base.

What’s included: the part or fabricated steel, the labor, the welding consumables, rust treatment, paint, and the photo record. The price is written and handed to you before any work begins, and it doesn’t change unless we find something structural that wasn’t visible. If that happens, we stop and show you before we keep going.

Every weld job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair isn’t right, we make it right, no argument, no charge, for a full year.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re a competent welder with a machine that can handle 1/4-inch steel, a bracket replacement is within reach. The honest advice is: check your bolt pattern before buying a replacement bracket, and don’t weld galvanized steel without proper ventilation or a respirator, it produces fumes that will make you ill. That said, if you don’t own a welder and the part that failed is under tension from the gate’s weight or the opener’s torque, this isn’t the project to learn on. A gate leaf that falls or swings uncontrolled weighs several hundred pounds and will do serious damage to anything in its path, including you.

We weld these brackets regularly. We know which Ghost Controls generations need the adapter plate, and we have the steel on hand to avoid a second trip. If you want to see what the failure looks like before committing, call us at (346) 315-4812. We’ll come out, take photos, write down what we find, and hand you a price before anything gets hot.
